Green Cup Challenge
Trinity-Pawling participates in the Green Cup Challenge, a month long event sponsored by the Green Schools Alliance. The Alliance is a collection of public, private, and independent schools whose mission is to create awareness and action about climate change and environmental stewardship. The Green Cup Challenge is a student driven, inter-school challenge promoting community efforts to reduce electrical usage and campus carbon footprints. The Challenge's primary goal is to increase community awareness about energy conservation, but it is also a platform for encouraging campus sustainability - from water conservation and waste reduction to recycling and reuse.
The Green Cup Challenge consists of 150 schools throughout the country. Other schools in our area participating in the challenge include: Choate, Kent, Hotchkiss, Millbrook, Salisbury, Taft, Berkshire, Westminster, and many other schools in New York, New Jersey, and New England.
The Green Cup Challenge occurs during the month of February. Though the Challenge is a competition, the truth is that with awareness and change, everybody wins.
WHAT CAN YOU DO? GET UNPLUGGED! SAVE! And CONSERVE!
- turn of lights
- keep windows shut to reduce wasted heat
- utilize natural lighting in classrooms, offices, and homes
- unplug already charged Ipods, MP3s, cell phones
- shut down computers or utilize a quick sleep mode
- replace incandescent light bulbs with efficient fluorescents
- In the words of Headmaster Smith...invest in sweater or two!
OTHER ACTIONS, aside from energy conservation, that are steps in the right direction for campus sustainability:
- recycling - aluminum, plastic, paper, ink cartridges
- waste reduction - food, garbage, heat
- reuse of materials
- reduce water use - shorten showers
- walking instead of driving
