In 1907 Dr. Gamage established the Pawling School grounded on the belief that boys who became men in our hallowed halls could serve their fellow man with faith and virtue.

A Commitment to Character

Today, Trinity-Pawling's rich history of academic, athletic and artistic excellence attracts young men with the ambition to achieve success. We remain committed to helping boys develop into men, as we have for more than a century.


1907 The Pawling School is founded by Dr. Frederick Gamage in a village property known as the Dutcher House.

1909 Financial gifts from Cluett and Simpson families enable purchase of the current campus property and construction of The Cluett Foundation.

1926 DePew Memorial Chapel is presented in memory of Ganson DePew '14 by his father.

1936 Barstow Memorial Science Building is given in memory of Frederic Duclos Barstow '15 by his parents.

1947 The school reopens as a branch of the Trinity School of New York City after four years of closure during World War II. Matthew E. Dann serves as headmaster of both schools.

1956 Matthew Dann moves to Pawling and devotes himself to Trinity-Pawling until 1970. During his tenure, five dormitories, Carleton Gymnasium, Tirrell Hockey Rink, the infirmary, the Dann Classroom Building, and dining hall are built.

1970 Phillips Smith is named headmaster.

1973 Day students, boys and girls, are admitted for the first time.

1978 Trinity-Pawling School becomes independent of Trinity School and acquires its own charter from the Board of Regents of the State of New York.

1981 Decision is made for T-P to once again be an all-boys school.

1983 Ground is broken for Starr Hall.

1986 T-P successfully concludes its first capital campaign.

1990 Archibald A. Smith III is named headmaster.

1992 A capital campaign begins and raises funds to fully restore Cluett, enclose the Tirrell Hockey Rink, build the McGraw Wrestling Pavilion, and support the endowment.

1995 The Middle School is established.

1998 The Rock Squash Courts are built.

2000 The Board of Trustees approves a Long Range Plan and Centennial Campaign.

2001 Construction begins on a science and technology wing to the Dann Classroom Building.

2002 The Ebert Science and Technology Center is completed and ground is broken for a new Arts Center.

2004 T-P celebrates the Grand Opening of the Center for the Arts and the Centennial Campaign is officially launched.

2004 A new football field, baseball diamond, and 400-meter all-weather running track are completed.

2005 Renovation and construction of five faculty residences is completed.

2007 Trinity-Pawling School celebrates its 100th anniversary.

2008 Ground is broken on Scully Hall, our state-of-the-art dining center, which opened Fall 2009.

2009 Inauguration of T-P's Mandarin Chinese and Cultural Studies Program.
