vs. Avon Old Farms
|Date:||September 23, 2017|
The Pride travelled to Avon Old Farms this weekend to open the season. The game started off slow, with both offenses struggling to gain much ground to start, but the Winged Beavers ultimately struck first when their tight end broke free and turned a short dump off to the flat into a 70 yard score. After another Pride punt, AOF would extend their lead to 14 with a one play 89 yard touchdown drive. The Pride would find themselves in trouble again on the next AOF drive but their defense managed to clamp down as the d-line started to get some pressure on the AOF quarterback to disrupt his rhythm. Christian Keyes ‘19 picked up a big sack in the red zone and forced an unsuccessful field goal try. Unfortunately, the Pride was unable to get anything going on the next series and was forced to settle for yet another punt. Avon would take this one all the way back and extend their lead to 21-0. AOF kept the pressure on from here as they forced another 3 and out for the Pride offense and then had another one play drive as the Pride secondary bit on a fake and got beaten over the top for a 76 yard score to take the game to 28-0 which is where the score would stay at the end of the half.
The Pride started the second half strong as Cam Tillman ‘18 rattled off an impressive 34 yard run where he refused to go down that put the Pride in AOF territory. The newfound momentum was short-lived as the Pride would fumble two plays later and Avon would tack on another score to bring the game to 35-0. Still, the Pride didn’t give up and they marched down the field on the next series behind a pair of long 25+ yard runs on consecutive plays by Chiz Umunakewe ‘18 and Ray Davis ‘19 before Cam Tillman found the endzone from 10 yards away. Ray Davis added one more score on the day on a scramble from 5 yards out. The final score was 42-13 Avon. TP will look to bounce back next week on the road against Loomis.
