Hockey - JV
vs. Avon Old Farms
|Date:||December 9, 2017|
The Pride traveled to Avon through a snow storm to take on the Winged Beavers at Jennings Rink. Due to the weather the coaches agreed to play two twenty-three minute halves to get the Pride on the road home ASAP.
After almost a scoreless half of play the teams combined for five goals in the final 4:48. Avon scored two quick tallies at 4:48 and 3:04. The Pride answered fourteen seconds later as CK Giancola lit the lamp. Avon answered just sixteen seconds later to go up 3-1. An intense forecheck by the Pride witnessed Griffin Moore taking a loose puck behind the next and wrapping it around backhand to make it 3-2 Avon with 0:23 left.
The frenetic pace continued in the second half, where Avon's relentless forecheck made life very tough for the Pride defensive players. The forwards struggled with turnovers on the clear giving Avon ample opportunities to widen the lead. Avon finally found the twine with 0:47 left in the game, just as the Pride were preparing to pull their goalie. The 4-2 score makes the game seem closer than it was, as Pride goaltender Alex Sywak was the star of the game - making 42 saves. The Pride defensive corps deserves credit for playing tough and not getting frustrated with the inconsistent and ineffective play of the forwards today. Marc Welch, Ridge Driscoll, Matt Dow, Matt Carroll, and Tyler Woods made numerous plays to keep the Pride in the game all afternoon.
A pit stop at the Danbury Mall food court on the way home brightened the mood, on a snowy and windy night. The JV Pride return to action on Saturday January 6th at Westminster. Let's hope there is no snow that day!
