The Pride JV Football team opened up their season against the Crimson Knights of Salisbury on Monday. They struggled with the run early on and Salisbury drew first blood with a touchdown on their second drive. The Pride responded well, stopping the two point try to keep the game at 6-0. On the next drive, quarterback Brandon Lombardo ‘20 found his groove, routinely finding Marquese Ward-Mourning ‘21 and Scott Stensrud ‘19 out of the wingback positions for big gains. The drive was capped off by a 25 yard strike to Stensrud up the seam for a TD and a hard fought two point score by Ward-Mourning. After that, both defenses stood tall for a few drives before the Crimson Knights were able to find the endzone one more time as the clock expired for the first half to take a 14-8 lead.
The third quarter was a defensive struggle. The Pride defensive line started generated some pressure on the Salisbury quarterback and Peter Meng ‘19 was able to get a big sack. John Dencker ‘19 was also a formidable force on defense, closing up running lanes across the middle of the field. Givanni Flaccavento ‘21 was able to force a recover a fumble on defense to give the Pride new life but the opportunity was squandered as the Pride would fumble the ball themselves a few plays later. The Pride found themselves backed up in the fourth quarter as the Crimson Knights drove the ball all the way to the Pride goal line before the defense started to make stops. The Pride were able to force a 4th and 1 but they couldn’t stop a quick QB sneak on 4th down to make it a 20-8 game. With under 4 minutes to go. Lombardo was able to lead one more scoring drive, finding Stensrud on a corner route. Stensrud broke two tackles on his way to a 45 yard score. Lombardo found Stefan Trifunovic ‘20 on an out route in the endzone to bring the score to 20-16 where the game would end.
