This is a course designed to help students in Grade 7 improve their keyboarding skills. We start the term off working strictly through traditional drills and repetition to familiarize ourselves with the setup of the keyboard through proper technique. We then move on to the Mavis Beacon Typing Tutor which is set up to meet the individual needs of each student. Everyone works at their own pace through individual personalized lessons. This is a term course offered during the fall.
Computer 7 (Fall)
The focus of the Computer Applications classes at Trinity-Pawling School is to develop our students computing skills, and to prepare them for classes here at Trinity-Pawling as well as in college. The Middle School curriculum is designed to provide the same material that the Computer Applications class provides to the upper school, but in 2 semesters, with 2 meetings per week. In the seventh grade, the focus is primarily with the Microsoft Word and PowerPoint applications, strengthening the skills with which the students came to the school. Working on small assignments as well as larger projects, the focus is on the best way to present a paper or a presentation using the tools of Word or Power Point. Presentation skills are also developed culminating with presentations to the class. Finally, several class periods are devoted to an introduction to programming using Alice, a 3D programming simulation environment where they can build worlds while understanding the basic concepts of programming languages.
A continuation of Computer 7, Computer 8 works primarily on spreadsheets and presenting information on the web. Short tasks as well as larger projects are used to solve problems in math and science using Excel. The Web development module focuses on a basic understanding of the web and developing web content. Additionally, computer care, and how to protect computers from modern threats such as viruses, adware and spyware is explored through research and hands on labs.
